MTV’s Total Request Live + Britney Spears: Comeback of the Year?

MTV’s Total Request Live + Britney Spears: Comeback of the Year?

It’s a scientifically proven fact, and if it’s not, we have some proof of our own. Early last week a certain television channel that goes by the acronym ‘MTV’ announced that it was relaunching a hit program that would surely have us all thinking back to simpler times.

Times when the hair of a Backstreet Boy would garner headlines, rather than potential nuclear war.

Total Request Live, or the more affectionately referred to ‘TRL’, had the internet’s attention with around 18,000 online mentions last week.

Most accrued on Monday with over 6,200, and some of the personalities that emerged in this discussion proves how important TRL was.

Long-time host, Carson Daly, was among the conversation’s top themes, as it’s fair to say the show was the launching pad for Daly’s career.

Britney on TRL baby, one more time?

Who else came up? None other than Britney Spears. Spears was a regularly featured artist on TRL.

Her Twitter handle accumulated more than a million impressions in this conversation, as it landed firmly within the 10-most mentioned handles in the TRL discussion.

Volume is great, but were people excited to hear TRL was returning? Did their nostalgia allow for trepidation to creep in on the quality of the reboot?

Apparently not, 82.4% of categorized mentions were positive.

Those mentions that were negative were mostly comprised of people’s concerns of how the reboot would stack-up next to the TRL of yesteryear.

Let’s move on…shall we?

Ooooooohhhhhh Scaramucci, we barely knew you

You may recall a certain social recap in a blog post quite similar to the one you’re reading now, well…we don’t make the news, only measure its social significance.

The former – although never official – White House Director of Communications, Anthony Scaramucci was relieved of his position on Monday.

While Scaramucci’s appointment and rant in The New Yorker racked up daily online mention totals of 191,000 and 290,000 totals, respectively, news of his dismissal recorded nearly 970,000 mentions for July 21 alone.

The internet was quick to point out things that have lasted longer than Scaramucci’s employment.

Another example was a certain celebrity marriage.

iPhone users are feeling the burn

One more before we let you go.

One of the most ubiquitous devices is the iPhone. In fact, it is the quintessential device. So valuable that people wish to protect their iPhones, but what happens when those protectors don’t protect you?

This week saw a massive recall of glittery iPhone cases as the liquid that suspended the glitter would actually cause irritation and chemical burns if it touched your skin.

This case, and recall, saw over 6,500 online mentions. This figure is only superseded by the amount of cases that are being recalled – reported to be some 263,000.

Women propelled the conversation slightly more than men, as women accounted for 54% of all unique authors on Twitter.
